I finally made it up the Fernsehturm, yesterday was clear and I had the afternoon free, so I went for it. Here are pictures from the panoramic view of Berlin from the highest building in Germany and one of the biggest in the world.

Here are pictures from the panoramic view of Berlin from the highest building in Germany and one of the biggest in the world. The view south includes the former Tempelhof Airport, the open space in the background. In the photo Looking towards IES, the center itself is hidden behind the large reddish buildings. The main street is Oranienburgerstrasse, which has lots of restaurants along it. The green area is Monbijoupark, where IES students have been playing pick-up soccer.

Karl Marx/ Frankfurter Allee (the name changes at Frankfurter Tor) is the main street that goes from Alexanderplatz east towards where I live. The black tower visible in the Looking southeast along the Spree picture is where part of the Bundeskriminalamt (like the German FBI) is located, which I visited on Wednesday. The picture of Frankfurter Tor (the white buildings with copper domes) shows about where I live, on the right side between Frankfurter Tor and the taller buildings in the background.
Handball! Philipp plays on the Flieden Handball team, and I got to see their game Sunday afternoon. Unfortunately they lost, but the other team had bigger players and more subs. I tried to get some action shots, and some of them turned out alright.
I spent a weekend visiting my German family, the Saemanns, my hosts the first time I was in Germany, in Fulda. It was great to see them again, and I really felt at home staying with them! There are some pictures of the Archimedes statue at Freiherr vom Stein Schule, the Gymnasium (school for college bound students) where Philipp graduated from, Laura is currently attending and I visited my first time in Germany. Also included is the city of Fulda at night. The Michaelskirche is the oldest standing church north of the Alps.

This set includes pictures from the old American border post Point Alpha, which is now a museum. It lay right along one of the most likely Soviet invasion routes into West Germany, through the Fulda Gap. The post was manned by the 14th “Blackhorse” Armored Cavalry Regiment.

The threat was so great, that bombs were placed in manholes to blow up the road and slow down an invasion. The post was manned by the 14th “Blackhorse” Armored Cavalry Regiment.

The flagpole doesn’t touch the ground, to show that the Americans were there as friends, not occupiers.
